Case Study - Bowmer & Kirkland - Next Distribution Centre

McDermotts undertook the groundworks and civil engineering package for this new 58,000m2 distribution centre for Next.

Location: Doncaster

Sector: Industrial

Project Value: £6.0m

Duration: 52 weeks

This 25-metre high distribution centre for Next spans 58,000m2 and one end of the steel structure features a five-storey office block.

Our works included:

  • Drainage
  • Pile cropping and flared heads
  • Attenuation systems and interceptor
  • Car park
  • Footways
  • External works and services
  • Foundations including those for the link bridge
  • CLSI pits
  • Concrete service yards

The centre is connected to an existing Next distribution centre on the other side of the road via a two-storey 120m link bridge.

Although unusual, the bridge enables forklift trucks to carry goods between the two centres reducing the requirement for lorries to use local roads.

By working closely with Bowmer & Kirkland on the drainage system, we were able to utilise two existing manholes and install the drainage at a depth of three metres rather than the planned eight metres, reducing the cost and time required for this part of the project.

The new structure sits on 10,000 pile caps, of which 4,000 had flared heads and a tight tolerance.
