Birmingham City University Phase 2a

Birmingham City University Phase 2a

A six-storey extension to the Birmingham City University campus at Eastside has been given the go ahead by the council’s planning committee. Known as ‘Plot 2a’, the extension to the existing £63 million Curzon Building is due to open in 2017 and will include teaching rooms and experimental and social learning departments.

The building uses a mixed-mode ventilation strategy utilising opening windows where possible and heat gains and occupancy levels are controlled to minimise the need for mechanical cooling. Biomass boilers and photovoltaic arrays provide the main renewable energy sources.

This development is the latest in a long line of regeneration work on the previously vacant land close to where the new HS2 station will be built.

Working with Willmott Dixon, McDermotts will be responsible for earthworks, the temporary earth retaining wall, drainage, RIC retaining walls, floor slabs and foundations.
